In St. Venanzo
Territory, the hamlet of Rotecastello (about 22 residents) has
a striking medieval character, though its origin probably dates
back to Etruscan times (an Etruscan tablet is visible on one of
the houses in the hamlet). The village, rising on a hill 360 metres
above sea level, surrounded by Calvana stream, has very interesting
artistic and naturalistic features: among these, the recently
restored tower dating from 13th century, and the Church of "Our
Lady of the Snow", with its beautiful renaissance fresco.
What strikes most, though, is the substantially intact urban setting,
enhanced by the absence of new buildings.

Despite its name (Rota Castellum, wheel-shaped castle) the hamlet
has a lance-point shape, with the tower at the eastern tip. The
village is surrounded by walls, the visit of which is a very charming
walk, among oaks and prune trees.
